Soon you will be able to roll out of your ice bed in a cool ice-themed room, walk a few steps, and hit the slopes at the largest indoor ski resort. Wintastar, the ski resort, will spread across almost 1 million square feet and allow visitors to experience perfect skiing conditions all year round. Visitors will be able to choose from three different slopes, with one expecting to meet the “Olympic standard for training,” measuring more than 1.8 miles (3 km). There will also be over 25 snow play attractions for non-skiers.
Guests at Wintastar will get to see “world-class winter sport competitions, ice sculpture shows, several theatres showcasing a wide variety of theatrical shows, concerts, and multi-dimensional cinematic displays,” according to the developers. There will also be restaurants and retail spaces throughout.
The Ice Hotel
If you fancy going for the whole cold experience, you can even book a room at the on-site ice hotel. There will be three other themed hotels at varying price points, offering different experiences like ski-in/ski-out lodgings or après-ski entertainment. The famous Ice Hotel in Sweden, and the many replicas which now exist all over the world, are wildly popular amongst all tourist groups. Now Shanghai is ready to adopt the themed hotel concept and the Wintastar will feature an ice hotel, even when the 90°F humid summer sets in.
The company behind the project is the same that built Ski Dubai. Back in 2005, this UAE indoor ski resort was the largest in the world. However, Shanghai is set to break this record at being almost three times larger. The Wintastar doesn’t yet have a date set for completion, but construction has already begun and knowing China’s skills in construction and manufacturing, it won’t be too long. The project is expected to be completed before the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing in 2022.
