It might sound like the perfect cure for cooties, but the truth is that Kristina Roth, the founder of the female-only oasis, enforced a strict no-male policy for completely different reasons.
SuperShe island is a testosterone-free zone off the coast of Finland. The concept behind booking a vacation in this exclusively gendered location targets women who need a break from men, all while enjoying the soft summer breeze on their skin, sun kissing their face and bathing in a worry-free environment.
“When there was a cute guy, women would put on lipstick,” Roth said in an interview, explaining how the idea first popped into her head. Roth was taking a much-needed vacation in Calabasas, California, when suddenly – men arrived and influenced all her friends’ mood for the worse. She quickly connected the dots and realized that the only way some women could reach pure relaxation nirvana would be in a place where you could “focus on yourself – don’t try to get your hormones up.”
Roth rationalized that she personally “loves men,” and the fact that she initiated this female-only resort does not banish any future possibilities of letting men in on the territory. Despite being accused of being sexist through her affirmative action, Roth told The Independent that men were not the issue here – women are. “Women need time to spend with other women” where they can “nurture each other’s dreams and desires,” she said confidently.
Once on the island, women “can expect activities such as yoga, meditation, healthy eating, cooking classes, fitness classes, and much more,” said a SuperShe representative.
To apply, all the woman needs to do is fill out an application with her personal details, including her full name, phone number and why she is excited to be a part of the SuperShe Community. If applicants want to assure their place on the island, they can also upload a video with a message.
